Strong
Public Education System

Trustees with Edmonton Public Schools need to be committed to public education.

I have been a fierce defender of public education, and its potential to uplift all students and our community. It is a deep belief that I will bring to my second term.

Smart and Strategic
Advocacy

Prior to being elected as Trustee in 2021, I spent over a decade as a relentless and successful community advocate at the municipal level.

Understanding how to get people to work together on tough problems, and then showing those ideas to leaders in a way that makes them want to help, has been very important to how I think and the contributions I've made as Trustee.

During my first term, I put forward several motions and championed a positive, solutions-focused approach to advocating to the Province. Our Board has seen success in our advocacy, but there is more to do.  â€‹

Solid
Board Governance

Students, staff, families and our wider community deserve a highly effective Trustee who keeps a constant focus on student success at Edmonton Public Schools.

Throughout my term, I've brought a clear understanding of what excellence in trusteeship and board governance looks like. I lead by example. This includes being accountable, continuously learning, adapting towards best practices and serving as part of a team. â€‹â€‹â€‹

When students succeed, our community succeeds

Julie understands it is job of an effective Trustee to bring together all stakeholders around a shared goal of supporting student success. Key to this is bringing diverse perspectives to the Board table to inform healthy debate and effective decision-making. This means staying connected to YOU throughout the term, just as I've been doing for four years - including events, returning calls and emails, and through my newsletter published after each public board meeting.

Julie knows that a respectful and team-based relationship with the Superintendent matters. As the Board's sole employee, it is critical to work together in solving problems and making progress towards our strategic plan. On September 1, our Board is welcoming a new Superintendent. As current Board Chair, I'm seeking re-election so I can support continuity and a smooth transition in this important relationship.

Julie has experienced first-hand the influential role that Trustees, as elected officials, play in nurturing a productive and professional relationship with other elected officials. This includes the Provincial government, local MLAs, city council and local MPs. Public education can be complex, and working collaboratively can make a big difference to finding solutions that work.

I acknowledge that we live, learn, work and play at amiskwaciwâskahikan on Treaty 6 territory. Public education is a powerful tool for students, their families and the wider community to learn the truth of the past while committing to ongoing acts of reconciliation so that we may build a better future together. I acknowledge all the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries and my responsibilities as someone who shares this land "as long as the sun shines, grass grows and river flows."
